When
one thinks of American Oil one tends to
gravitate towards the image of a cowboy
sitting in a long white limousine with
steer horns on the hood and big smirk
on his face. Houston and that image have
been actively cultivated by the television
industry, and some say Houston has even
profited by it. While not as large as
its bigger sister city Dallas, Houston
is considered on of the fastest growing
cities in America. While it is true that
there is a history of oil production in
Houston that isn’t the whole story.
The city of Houston started out in the
1830s as nothing more than a piece of
barren land in the middle of nowhere.
Like the American Dream itself, the city
grew from a hamlet to a village to a town
to a city. By 1901 oil was discovered
and the once barren ground began to squirm
with both oil derricks and people. People
displaced by the Civil War had come to
rest in cities like Houston because it
lacked the devastation cities like Atlanta.
Houston also grew because people began
emigrating from Mexico, and many found
Houston an excellent place to start a
new home. Today Houston is a modern city
with everything an urban city dweller
could need, including miles upon miles
of identical track housing. Welcome the
21st century.
