This
rocky and hill covered island off the
coast of California is sometimes known
as Santa Catalina Island. It is part of
a chain of islands called the Channel
Islands, but it the only one that is permanently
or significantly inhabited. Of the three
and one half thousand people that live
on Catalina Island most live in the only
city, known as Avalon. Avalon is a quaint
and picturesque town without the skyscrapers
that dominate nearby Los Angeles. While
it may seem like a sleepy little place
it is a fact that tens of thousands of
people visit Catalina Island every year,
so the place has a bustling tourist industry.

When
on Catalina Island people like to boat,
fish, go to the conservatory, and perhaps
visit the botanical gardens. There is
a lot of wild space left on the island,
and there are many hiking trails for visitors
to enjoy. Life on Catalina Island is anything
but rushed, and many people go there to
unwind for a few days and stay at a Bed
& Breakfast before returning to the
mainland. Strolling is also a popular
activity, perhaps a walk along the pier
or along the docks with an ice cream cone.
Just relax and watch the sun go down.
