The
City of Berlin is both the capitol city
of Germany and one of the largest cities
in Europe. With a population of around
3.5 million people it has seen many important
moments in history. Berlin is located
in the province of Brandenburg, but it
is so important that it constitutes a
province all to itself. It was founded
over 1250 years ago in the year 750 CE
by a Slavic tribe called the Heveller.
Berlin is a crazy city as far as architecture
goes. Germans have always been interested
in architecture and Berlin was not spared
from many grand designs. Over its history
it has seen many conflicts, but the Second
World War was the biggest and it has had
a tremendous influence over the shape
of the city.

When
the Nazi Party, lead by Adolf Hitler,
seized power in the 1930s the city of
Berlin contained many ancient buildings.
It was planned that Hitler’s Architects
would “wipe the city clean”
and make a new and better Berlin. The
city was wiped clean, but it was the bombs
of The Allied Powers that did the cleaning.
After the war much of Berlin lay in ruins.
Further more the powers of the Warsaw
Pact built a wall that bisected the city,
and in Western Germany more modern buildings
were constructed while across the infamous
“Berlin Wall” communist blockhouses
were slowly built.
Today a wave of modernism has added yet
another layer to this ancient city. German
designs are still some of the most revolutionary
in the world, but now instead of merely
breaking new ground Berliners must search
for unexploded bombs. It is a legacy of
the war that before World War Two the
population of Berlin was 4.5 million,
a figure that has not been achieved even
to this day.
