Agra
is a city on the Yamuna River, located
in the Nation of India. It is located
in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh,
and is most famous for a monument known
as the Taj Mahal. Agra was once a capitol
city, back in the 1500s. It was the seat
of kings, and because of this the Agra
of today has many interesting and historical
buildings, such as the Taj Mahal. With
a population of over 7.5 million it is
considered a major city, and its citizens
speak a mix of Hindi, Urdu, and English.
Other attractions in Agra include the
Fatepur Sikri and the Sikandra. Both of
these monuments center around the life
of a man once known as Emperor Akbar,
who duing the 16th century made Agra the
capital of the Mughal Empire for 10 years.
The
Fatepur Sikri is a “city”
that was built and then abandoned, and
was meant to be a center of worship of
the Islamic faith. Because of this is
has many Mosques in its borders. The Sikandra
is also known as the “Tomb of Akbar”.
This building is similar to the Taj Mahal
displaying arcitechture from Hindu, Christian,
Islamic, Buddhist, and Jain faiths. Yhis
makes it an excellent example of how all
of these cultures came to exist as one
interesting whole.
